Today I’m assembling a miniature piano out of building blocks. Which sounds sweet and simple until you see it. This thing is big. Detailed. The kind of project that comes with multiple instruction booklets and quietly asks if you’re emotionally prepared.
This white piano is a fresh start. Last year, I began building a black one and didn’t quite make it to the finish line. It’s still there, patiently waiting, half-built and judgment-free. I like to think it wasn’t abandoned—just paused. Life happens. Motivation ebbs. Projects sometimes need to rest.
My hope is that starting this white piano will spark something. Maybe inspiration. Maybe momentum. Maybe just enough confidence to go back and finish the black one too. Sometimes beginning again is easier than forcing yourself to continue where you left off.
There are five steps total in the instructions, and today’s goal is intentionally modest: complete step one. No pressure to conquer the entire build. Just show up, follow the directions, and enjoy the process of placing one piece at a time.
And honestly? I’m really happy with how it’s turning out. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching a recognizable shape slowly emerge from a pile of tiny parts. It feels calm. Focused. Almost meditative.
So for now, I’m calling step one a success. The piano is taking shape, my motivation feels gently restored, and I’m optimistic about step two. One block at a time. One step at a time. Sometimes that’s all it takes to turn an unfinished solo into a duet.
